Smart lights turn green if bike rides up
HIGH-TECH traffic lights currently being tested turn green when they see a cyclist approaching.
The system being tested in Wolverhampton, Coventry and Southampton is intended to reduce the accident rate.
It costs just under £700 per traffic light to install.
The move comes as a Department for Transport survey found the Covid-19 pandemic had sparked a boom in cycling.
Brian Jackson, chief executive of tech firm Now Wireless, said: “Our system deals with the reality that cyclists sometimes run through a red light.
“It does so by simply making sure it’s always green for them. Our system can be calibrated to prioritise even a single cyclist.”
