Police death suspect still can’t be quizzed
THE man suspected of shooting dead a sergeant in a custody centre is still not well enough to be interviewed, say police.
Matt Ratana, 54, was shot with a revolver as he dealt with Louis De Zoysa, 23.
Despite being handcuffed, the suspect drew the gun and fired it several times, apparently shooting himself in the neck. Sgt Ratana died in St Georges hospital, Tooting, two hours after the shooting in Croydon, South London, on September 25.
De Zoysa, who fought for life in the same hospital, is now in a stable condition. Scotland Yard said: “The 23-year-old suspect is now in a stable, non lifethreatening condition. However he has life changing injuries and remains unfit for interview.”
The force would not expand on his injuries or what the prognosis is. De Zoysa was initially arrested for possessing ammunition and
Class B drugs. The Independent Office for Police Conduct said he was handcuffed with his hands behind his back before being escorted into the building. No police firearms were discharged.
An inquest heard Sgt Ratana died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
