MURRAY WIN COULD END HIS SEASON

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

ANDY MURRAY will consider stopping his season to get ready for 2021 if he wins a title in the next two weeks.

The former world No.1 starts his indoor season today against Fernando Verdasco at the bett1HULKS Indoors in Cologne. The winner will face top seed Alex Zverev in the second round.

Murray (below) lost in the opening round of the French Open and has played only six matches this year.

The world No.115 will play another ATP 250 event at the same venue next week.

But the wildcard, who won his only tournament since hip surgery indoors at the European Open last October, said another title could see him close 2020 and start his preparations for the Australian Open.

Murray said: “I want to try and win tournaments. Indoor hard courts have been a good surface for me so that’s the goal.

“My schedule for the rest of the year depends on how I do. If I do well in the next couple of weeks, then I might not play after that. But if I don’t do so well, I will try and play. I want to play matches as my body tends to feel better the more I play.”

British No.3 Cam Norrie yesterday beat Taylor Fritz 6-4 4-6 6-3 in the first round of the St Petersburg Open.
