Union blasts Amazon over Covid-19 staff

TEN Amazon staff at one centre tested positive in the past week.

The online giant claims none of the workers at its fulfilment centre in Coventry, West Mids, had shown symptoms of Covid-19 or contracted it from each other.

It said it had been detected due to the firm’s increased testing.

But the GMB union claimed Amazon was “sacrificing terrified workers on the altar of profit.”

The union said two positive tests coincided with the busy annual Prime Day discount event.

Amazon said: “Safety is our top priority at Amazon and we make sure safety is front of mind on Prime Day, just as it is during every day of our business.”

The firm, which has its own Covid testing lab, added: “Since March, we have implemented an additional 150 significant process changes including the provision of masks and additional cleaning to ensure health and safety.”
