JASON O’HALLORAN drew first blood as the Bennetts British Superbike final kicked off at Brands Hatch.

The Aussie McAMS Yamaha rider (above) stormed to a hot lap of 1min 26.113secs yesterday, holding off late charges from Buildbase Suzuki’s Bradley Ray and title challenger Glenn Irwin.

O’Halloran, who is one of five riders who could win the title tomorrow and currently lies fourth in the points, said: “I’m just going to push to the maximum. We’ve got the speed to win races, and if we can do that we can win the championship.”

With one race today and two tomorrow, VisionTrack Ducati’s Josh Brookes has a 16-point lead over team-mate Christian Iddon, with Honda Racing’s Irwin two points behind and a point ahead of O’Halloran.

The last contender, Taz Mackenzie, will be hoping for better luck after crashing his McAMS Yamaha into trees.
