Biden rounds on US virus failures in Trump debate

DONALD Trump was told by White House rival Joe Biden he “cannot remain president” due to his handling of Covid-19.
The President told the American people the country was “rounding the corner” as the two candidates met for the final time ahead of the US election on November 3.
But his claim was mocked by Biden who said the US is about to “go into a dark winter”.
Although a much more restrained affair than their first encounter last month, their conflict on policies could not have been more dramatic as they clashed on coronavirus, healthcare, the environment and immigration.
For many Americans, the night’s most jarring moment was when Trump showed a lack of empathy when describing 545 immigrant children taken from their parent’s by his administration following the President’s attack on migrants.
He described them while being held in cages as “so well taken care of. They are in facilities that are so clean”. The men were most at odds over the pandemic as the President continued to downplay its seriousness.
The debate came as America recorded 77,000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday – the highest daily total so far.
In the early minutes of the debate, Trump, 74, reiterated his inaccurate assertion thatt an antibody treatment he was given for Covid-19 was a cure. He then once again repeated his false claim 2.2 million people were “expected to die” from the virus in the US bragging about how his performance saved thousands of people. He then said a US-made vaccine for the disease was “ready”.
Biden slammed his response. “[Trump] says, we’re learning to live with it. People are learning to die with it,” he said.
In the debate, moderated by NBC journalist Kristen Welker, 44, Trump portrayed himself as a champion of black people calling himself the “least racist person in this room”.
He said he has done more for African Americans than any president other than Abraham Lincoln.
Biden, 77, laughed and said: “He is one of the most racist presidents we’ve had in modern history.”
