Sticking to rules helps this to end

- BY MARTIN BAGOT HEALTH & SCIENCE EDITOR

LOCKDOWNS do work – we know this from the first one.

They achieve their aim of rapidly reducing viral transmission and can get an outbreak under control.

This lockdown is different though, as schools, nurseries and universities will not close.

Earlier this year the NHS issued a blanket order to postpone planned treatments, but this time it is doing all it can to keep them going.

Exercise will not be restricted and people can socialise with one other person at a time outdoors. This aims to avoid some lockdown harm but the jury is out as to how much it will reduce its effectiveness.

It may mean it takes longer to cut infection rates which is why the Government is not committing to lifting lockdown everywhere on December 2. Test and Trace has failed so far but could have an impact when cases fall.

Another important factor will be public adherence.

The more we all stick to the rules – even if we don’t agree with them – the quicker this lockdown can end.

It is important to remember that this will not go on for ever.

A vaccine is probably on the horizon and the NHS will get even better at treating Covid-19.

We just have to help it get through the winter first.
