Carthy climbs to maiden win
BRITAIN’S Hugh Carthy claimed his first Grand Tour stage win to move up to third overall in the Vuelta a Espana.
Carthy, 26, distanced a trio of Aleksandr Vlasov, Enric Mas and Richard Carapaz in the final two kilometres to win by 16 seconds after a gruelling final ascent on the Angliru.
Carapaz retook the overall lead after yesterday’s 12th stage, but Carthy said: “It’s a dream come true to win a race, but a Grand Tour win, on a mythical climb, it really doesn’t get any better.”
Ecuador’s Carapaz sits 10secs clear of former leader Primoz Roglic.
