PEARCE STEP DOWN TO BEG FOR A START

- BY STEVE JUDGE

ALEX PEARCE admitted his short stint as stand-in Millwall manager will not guarantee him a place in the team.

The club skipper hands the reins back to Gary Rowett today after taking charge of the last two games alongside Shaun Williams.

He was forced to take over with all of the first-team coaching staff isolating after boss Gary Rowett tested positive for Covid-19.

Pearce, 31, tasted the highs and lows of management with a win at Preston last Wednesday before Saturday’s low against Huddersfield.

It provided food for thought on his future, but now he is champing at the bit to play his part on the pitch at Norwich tomorrow.

When asked if he will be in the team, Pearce said: “The gaffer is back so me and Willo will be back available to play.

“It has been a very interesting experience, we have enjoyed it. We did not enjoy losing this one but we loved the other night.”

Huddersfield recorded a fourth win in 10 games under Carlos Corberan who has quickly stamped his style on the team.

Slick passing paved the way for Josh Koroma (above) to sweep home the opener. Lightning breaks at the death saw Pipa strike, after Bartosz Bialkowski failed to hold his shot, and Lewis O’Brien convert Juninho Bacuna’s pass. But with Bristol City up next tomorrow, Corberan revealed he keeps things simple as there is little time to work with his players.

He said: “We try to have an identity and do not change that whether we play home or away, then it is easier to prepare because you have one idea.” MILLWALL: Bialkowski 6, Hutchinson 6, Cooper 6, M Wallace 6, Romeo 7, Woods 6, Leonard 6, Malone 7 (Bennett 65, 6), J Wallace 7, Bradshaw 6 (Smith 46, 6), Mahoney 6 (Bodvarsson 79, 5) HUDDERSFIELD: Hamer 6, Duhaney 6, Sarr 8, Schindler 6, Toffolo 7, Hogg 6, O’Brien 7, Pritchard 7 (Bacuna 46, 6), Diakhaby 7 (Pipa 66, 6), Mbenza 7 (Campbell 85), Koroma 7
