WHEELER IS READY TO ROLL

- BY RON LEWIS ANTHONY STEWART (WYCOMBE)

DAVID WHEELER hopes his historic goal will provide the spark to fire Wycombe up the Championship table.

Wheeler (above) headed in Joe Jacobson’s corner with the final touch of the first half as Wanderers grabbed their first-ever win in the second tier of English football

A magnificent secondhalf defensive effort secured all three points at Adams Park.

But while the goal ensures Wheeler’s place in Wycombe folklore, he knows the more important matter was building towards the club’s fight against relegation.

“It’s a cool thing to be part of, but there are just under 40 games left so there are hopefully more to come,” the winger said.

“One of the big parts of why we have been so successful in the last year or so is because we are so dangerous from set-pieces and we are just starting to get back to what we are good at.”

Garry Monk insisted he was still the right man to be in charge at Sheffield Wednesday, despite a fourth-successive defeat that kept them anchored on the foot of the table on minus-four points, after their 12-point deduction.

“It is probably the toughest position I have been in at this club, but I am not going to start losing belief in myself,” the Wednesday manager said.

“This week hasn’t been good enough. But they gave everything, they ran their socks off.” WYCOMBE: Allsop 7, Grimmer 7, Knight 6, Stewart 8, Jacobson 6, Adeniran 6 (Bloomfield 55, 6), Wheeler 7 (Onyedinma 71, 6), Horgan 6, Thompson 6, Kashket 6, Akinfenwa 7 (Ikpeazu 71, 6) SHEFF WED: Wildsmith 7, Palmer 6, Iorfa 7, Borner 6, Harris 5 (Brown 60, 6), Pelupessy 5 (Kachunga 67, 6), Bannan 6, Reach 6, Windass 6, Marriott 5, (Rhodes 77, 5), Paterson 6
