YOUR MEMORIES

-

This is a photo of my father George Hannington holding his Thompson submachine gun. It was taken in Greece in 1944. He was in the Royal Artillery and served in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Greece and didn’t return home until 1946.

His brother James wasn’t so lucky. Uncle Jim was in the East Surrey Regiment and was killed in Belgium on May 21, 1940. The two brothers married two sisters from Shepherd’s Bush.

Jim is buried in Kastor, Belgium, and we, as a family, have visited his grave numerous times. We are grateful to the local school children who leave flowers on his grave on Remembrance Day. Roy Hannington Reading, Berks
