Sender steps forward, thanks to Mirror
THE mystery writer of a letter claiming to know the killer of a man who disappeared 28 years ago has come forward, thanks to the Mirror.
Cleveland Police hailed the “significant development” in the Steven Clark murder investigation yesterday.
Steven, 23, vanished in December 1992, in Saltburn, North Yorkshire.
In September his parents Doris, 81, and Charles, 78, both former police officers, were held on suspicion of murder after a cold case review. They deny any wrongdoing and were released under investigation.
Three weeks ago, we published extracts from the letter – sent anonymously to officers in 1999 – which claimed that Steven was murdered.
Cleveland Police said: “The coverage we received has directly led to a major development in the case. We’d like to thank the Mirror for its support and publicising this investigation.”
Det Chief Insp Shaun Page, who leads the murder inquiry, said
new searches will be carried out. He added: “This latest development marks another significant moment which has included new sightings of Steven on the day of his murder and a wealth of new material being uncovered.
“The investigation is moving forward, we continue to urge anyone with any information to contact us.”
Steven disappeared around lunchtime on December 28, near his home in Marske- bytheSea, three miles from Saltburn.
His mother had reported him missing, saying he had failed to reappear after going to a public toilet.
