Local lines in North ‘more use than HS2’

-

A HIGH speed rail link for parts of the North was thrown into further doubt yesterday as analysts urged priority for other projects.

The National Infrastructure Commission said investment should be pumped into regional networks rather than build the full HS2 line to Leeds.

Its Rail Needs Assessment said it could be “cheaper and faster” to improve journeys through new lines and upgrades.

NIC chairman Sir John Armitt said: “We think there are ways of bringing forward benefits while keeping options open.”
