He threw uppercut that if I’d had a weak chin would have KO’d me for a MONTH.. the kid’s red hot ..remember his name.. Anthony Joshua

WHAT FURY SAID AFTER THEIR 2010 SPARRING SESSION

- BY CHRIS McKENNA

TYSON FURY once admitted Anthony Joshua gave him a beating in sparring as an old interview with the Gypsy King emerged this week.

The WBC heavyweight champion labelled WBA, IBF and WBO title holder Joshua a “big bum dosser” after he knocked out Kubrat Pulev at the weekend.

It is the latest in a long line of insults Fury has hurled at his British rival, who he wants to fight next year. But they have sparred in the past and, in 2010, just two years into his pro career, Fury – who was 22 at the time – shared the ring with a young prospect called Joshua.

Fury ( right , back in those days) was speaking soon after the sparring session to BBC Radio London when he revealed how it had gone. And he was a lot more generous to his rival in those days as he tipped him for the top.

Back then, he said: “I came up yesterday from Manchester and I went down to Finchley Boxing Club. I sparred with the ABA Champion, Anthony Joshua. He’s red-hot, him, he’s very good. To be honest with you, I thought I’m only going to take it easy because he’s only an amateur and he probably won’t spar again if I go mad.

“But he’s rushed out at me… bash! He gave me a big uppercut right in the point of the chin. If I’d had a bit of a weak chin, like David Price, I’d have been knocked out for a month.

“He’s very, very, very good. “He’s only young, but watch out for that name! Anthony Joshua. He is one prospect for the future. I’m a good prospect. I rate myself as one of the top heavyweights in the world.

“He came out at me for three rounds and he gave me a beating. I thought, ‘Oh my god, an amateur’s killing me!’

“The kid’s only 20 – and I’m a handful myself – but for him to put up a good performance like that against a top prospect in me, I think he’s one for the future.

“I’d say he is the best amateur boxer in this country, as a super heavyweight, by a mile.”
