Tragic boxer ‘over-trained’ for fatal fight
A TEENAGE boxer who died seconds after a fight had a hidden heart condition and had “chronically over-trained” for the contest, an inquest was told.
Eddie Bi lbey, 17, collapsed in the ring as he waited for the results of the three-round bout in 2017.
Eddie, from Ripley, Derbys, was pronounced dead in hospital just over an hour later.
As he prepared for the welterweight contest, Eddie would wrap himself in duvets and go without fluids for lengthy periods to keep his weight down, the hearing was told.
He also had an enlarged heart and Dr Mark Faghy told the inquest that condition and his training regime could have acted together in a harmful way.
