On Last Night’s TV

- IAN HYLAND

Beat The Chasers, ITV ★★★★★

Bradley Walsh obviously decided he was going to start the new year in the same way he ended the old one. By continuing his attempts to break the record for most TV appearances by one man in a single week.

Unfortunately, the second series of his challenge show Breaking Dad was scuppered last night by another podgy middle-aged man who likes to take on big challenges that he is not really cut out for.

Luckily, Bradley had already sneaked in an appearance on This Morning, so Boris Johnson’s sudden press conference wasn’t too much of a blow to his plans for TV schedule domination.

The even better news is that there appears little danger of familiarity breeding contempt

any time soon. As long as Bradley keeps delivering shows that are as good as Beat The Chasers he’ll be fine.

This second run has already got off to a flyer. On Sunday night it looked like two of the chasers, Shaun Wallace and Mark Labbett, wanted to beat each other. Plus, an unlucky contestant missed out on £100,000 by just one second.

Then, last night, we did have the excitement of a big winner.

Given how ITV usually holds these back until the end of the week – and considering Kat from Essex won “only” £50,000 – I’m guessing that means we’ve got an even bigger one to come.

Who knows, if someone scoops the top prize on Sunday night Bradley might even get a bonus 30-second slot on News at Ten.

They all count, Bradders.
