Warrington chief says Aussie will be big hit in Super League
GREG INGLIS arrives in England this week with his new boss tipping him to take Super League by storm.
The Australian legend has spent time in rehab for drink and depression problems and has not played since retiring in April 2019.
But Warrington chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick said: “Greg is raring to go and is in really good condition because he’s been working hard with a personal trainer under our guidance.
“There are some top players and some great players and then there is Greg Inglis above all of that.
“He is often referred to as one of the greatest ever to play the game and is going to be so special for not only our fans but the whole of Super League. He’s had time off from the game but he’s in a positive mindset and eager to get back playing.”
The former Melbourne Storm and South Sydney centre, who is 34 next week, has signed a one-year deal.
He set the move in motion, after asking friend and Wolves forward Jason Clark if they would be interested in signing him. Inglis will join his new Wolves team- mates for the first time on Friday for fitness tests with pre-season training starting next Monday.
Uncertainty surrounds England half back Gareth Widdop, with reports linking him with a move back to the NRL and Australia where his family are.
But Fitzpatrick said: “I expect him to be back in for testing on Friday and to report back to training next week.”
Fitzpatrick says all the Wolves players have been strongly reminded to stick to Covid restrictions, and the RFL have also contacted all clubs to hammer home the message.
Wakefield Trinity condemned four of their players at the weekend after it was discovered they had spent New Year’s Eve together in breach of protocol.
Fitzpatrick said: “Our players know that there will be repercussions if there are any breaches of the guidelines.”
