Gas workers stay united on walkout

- BY ALAN JONES

BRITISH Gas engineers are said to be solidly behind a five- day national strike which began yesterday.

The GMB union said its members were pushed into action by British Gas owner Centrica and are now mounting socially distanced picket lines.

It pledged emergencies and households with vulnerable people will not be affected.

Justin Bowden, GMB national officer, said: “Fire and rehire pay-cut threats from British Gas chief executive Chris O’Shea have provoked thousands of engineers and call centre staff to strike.”

Centrica insisted: “To avoid more job losses and maintain a skilled team of engineers, employed directly by the company, new terms and conditions are essential.”
