Streaming is behind UK’s music boom

- BY TOM HORTON

GROWTH in streaming’s popularity last year helped the UK music market to its highest revenue since 2006, a trade body says.

Streaming revenues rose 15.5% to £1.2billion, the Entertainment Retailers Association says.

Kim Bayley, head of the ERA, said: “No one could have foreseen this dramatic leap as digital services filled the gap left by shuttered cinemas, concert halls and stores.”

The boom comes amid criticism of streaming firms such as Spotify.

Paul McCartney and Nile Rodgers are among stars saying musicians deserve to be paid a larger proportion of revenues.

The Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Committee is carrying out an inquiry into the issue.
