A WELL-MEANING dog-walker was mortified after the human toe she found buried in a field turned out to be a tiny potato.

Katie Wilkinson, 26, called the police as she was exercising her dog, Phoebe, and they conducted a search with sniffer dogs.

Katie said: “I saw something sticking out from the ground and I immediately thought it looked like a toe. I sent it to all of my friends and family.

“Every single person replied saying that it was definitely a toe.”

She claims a detective told her: “Even I thought it was a toe.”

Her “gruesome discovery” was made on Tuesday in the field near her home in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear.

A Northumbria Pol ice spokesman said: “The report was made in good faith and we would encourage anyone who sees anything suspicious to report it.”
