DARLOW: I WON’T LET GO NOW I’M UP TO SPEED

- BY SIMON BIRD

KARL DARLOW is determined to prove he deserves to be Newcastle’s permanent No.1.

The keeper (left) has turned in a series of top-class performances since taking over from injured Martin Dubravka in pre-season.

The Slovakia star is fit again and pushing for a recall in the FA Cup against Arsenal – but Darlow insists he won’t give up on his new lease of life. The 30-year-old, who recently penned a new contract, said: “It’s down to my performances. I have given myself a fair crack.

“It’s been a tough couple of years not playing but I’ve been waiting for a chance to prove myself.

“When you are training every day and not getting rewarded, it is a kick in the teeth.

“I have always backed myself to do the business. I think I’ve started well, but it is only a start. There is nothing to get carried away with.” Darlow was brilliant keeping Liverpool at bay, and will have another busy day at the Emirates.

He added: “Martin got injured in pre-season so I had the knowledge that I was going to start the season which gave me time to really zone in, prepare and focus.

“It is better than when you are thrown in for cup games here and there. Playing week in, week out in the Premier League gets you a bit of momentum.”
