Debate on age of universe is settled
THE age of the universe has been confirmed at 14 billion years.
Scientists took a new look at the oldest light from the Big Bang and combined the data with cosmic geometry. Until 2019, its age was pegged at around 14 billion years, based on observations by the European Space Agency’s Planck satellite. But researchers measuring the movements of galaxies and suggested it was hundreds of millions of years younger.
Now, a team at America’s Cornell
University has settled the dispute. Lead author Dr Steve Choi said: “We find an expansion rate right on the estimate by the Planck team.
“This gives us more confidence in measurements of the universe’s oldest light.”
