Thaw gives racing hope for the week

-

THE cold weather is loosening its grip on racing as bosses at Hereford are confident the track will pass an inspection at 7.30am today.

Although the track was still described yesterday as “frozen in places” Hereford’s executive director Rebecca Davies said: “We are very hopeful.

“The frost got down to -4C and we were frozen, but it is not due to drop below freezing tonight, and it is forecast to be 6C tomorrow.

“On the basis of that, and as long as the forecast is right, I’d be very hopeful we will be racing.”

Although tomorrow’s fixture at Fairyhouse, rescheduled from Friday, must pass a 1.00pm check today, Wetherby chief executive Jonjo Sanderson reported snow on the track to have melted ahead of Tuesday’s card.

“From 3pm to 3.30pm it started to thaw, and I hope that when I get to the racecourse in the morning it will be green,” said Sanderson.

“But, because it’s been a slow thaw, there shouldn’t be a whole load of moisture dumped on the track at once.

“The ground will be testing but without oodles of puddles everywhere.”

Yesterday’s jumps action at Exeter went ahead as planned after passing three inspections.
