FRANK WANTS TO BUY TIME

- BY DARREN LEWIS

FRANK LAMPARD has pleaded with fans to show patience to his Chelsea new boys.

Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, bought for a combined £116million, finally found the target again as little Morecambe were polished off.

Werner ended a 12-game goal drought while fellow German Havertz grabbed his first in 15 games.

Lampard said: “People talk about the youth in the squad but what we can’t ask of the youth is to be killers and to be consistent. That will come in time.

“I’m pleased for Timo because strikers want to score goals. He has had plenty of near-misses and in this game it wasn’t easy as they didn’t leave a lot of space in behind.

“But we understand at the club that some of the greatest players who have come into this league haven’t found it at all easy at the beginning.”

England midfielder Mason Mount put a strong Blues side ahead from 25 yards on his 22nd birthday.

Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi struck either side of half-time before Havertz headed the fourth with five minutes left.

Lampard added: “When you look at the top of the scoring charts you find players who are 28 or 29, players who have had to work their way to the top.

“With our players people look at price tags and expect them to reach those levels. But there is work to be done to get to that.”

Morecambe boss Derek Adams (above) was not expecting to face such a strong Chelsea line-up. “When I saw the team I wasn’t too happy,” he said. “But they showed great respect to the FA Cup.”
