LAW AND ORDER Mick and Marianne leave court in 1968
Marianne Faithfull’s place in rock ‘n’ roll history was cemented when she was found nude and wrapped in a fur rug when the police raided Rolling Stone Keith Richard’s house for drugs.
She was Mick Jagger’s girlfriend, and both Jagger and Richards were later arrested and charged with drugs offences.
During the widely publicised trial, the prosecution said that 19-year-old singer Marianne was the only woman at the house, dressed in nothing but a fur rug that she let slip occasionally. They claimed her lack of inhibition was a sign that she was under the influence of cannabis.
On June 29, 1967, Jagger was given a £200 fine and sentenced
NO SATISFACTION Jagger’s drugs bust made front page to three months’ imprisonment for possession of four amphetamine tablets.
Richards was found guilty of allowing cannabis to be smoked on his property and sentenced to one year in prison and a £500 fine.
They were both jailed with Jagger taken to Brixton Prison in South London, and Richards to Wormwood Scrubs, although they were both released on bail the next day.
The sentences caused a national outcry and were portrayed as an establishment attempt to crucify Britain’s most insolent rock band.
On appeal, Richards’ sentence was overturned and Jagger’s was amended to a conditional discharge.
