CHUCK BERRY JAILED

-

Chuck Berry hits like Roll Over Beethoven and Johnny B Goode saw him blaze a trail in the 1950s.

But there was a dark underside to the man nicknamed The Father of Rock ’n’ Roll – and it all came to a head in the 1960s.

At the age of 18 he had been jailed for petty robbery. Then in 1960 – now a married father of four – he was jailed after being found guilty of taking a 14-year-old girl, Janice Escalanti, across a state line for “immoral purposes”.

He claimed he didn’t know how young she was and she had only complained as he had fired her from one of his clubs.

He eventually served 18 months in prison and continued to record music, but unsurprisingly his popularity never recovered.
