THE PILL

It has been hailed by many as the greatest scientific invention of the 20th century, and it changed women’s lives for ever.

Back in 1961 women’s lives were very different, with most expected to stay at home and raise a family while the men went out to work.

But the Pill, introduced on the NHS in 1961, liberated women and changed everything.

It took time, and years of controvers­y however. When the Pill was first introduced it could only be prescribed to married women and that didn’t change until 1967.
