On this day 75 YEARS AGO (1946)

We reported on the first UN General Assembly in London. There was a row over who should be president with the majority wanting Belgian Foreign Minister Paul Spaak while the Soviets favoured Norwegian Trygve Lie.

59 YEARS AGO (1962)

Four thousand people died when a landslide of ice and rocks engulfed seven villages in the Andes, in north western Peru. Another avalanche in the region in 1970 killed 20,000.

21 YEARS AGO (2000)

Seven Scottish fishermen drowned when their scallop-dredger sank in gales in the Irish Sea. Their last ill-fated radio message said they were heading for safety to the Isle of Man.
