E-VEHICLES TO SAVE EARTH:
MAKING electric cars as cheap as conventional vehicles could hold the key to limiting global warming and saving the planet, a study claims.
Scientists say small transformations in human societies can spark rapid changes that slash emissions. Professor Tim Lenton, director of the
Global Systems Institute at Exeter University, warned the world is “dangerously close” to the point of no return and called for “small coalitions of countries” to trigger “upward scaling tipping cascades”, such as in transport and power.
Electrical vehicles are costlier than petrol or diesel cars but cheaper to run and account for up to 3% of new car sales globally – and over half in Norway, thanks to green pricing policies.
Uptake in a few key locations – like China and the EU – could drive down costs and Prof Lenton called for “a dramatic acceleration of progress”.
