Faz v Russell will take the LIONS share of attention

-

OWEN FARRELL against Finn Russell provides a fascinating sub-plot to the Calcutta Cup clash at Twickenham today.

It is too early to bill it as an eliminator for Lions’ fly-half selection, but no question it offers up a pointer. The pair have been big rivals recently for their clubs in the European Champions Cup (above).

Farrell is the known quantity. He has worn the jersey, won Test matches and the Lions have lost neither series featuring him.

Racing 92 star Russell is the maverick, the fly-half all of us would pay to watch but a guy capable of costly mistakes as well as outrageous brilliance.

Twice in Scotland’s last three meetings with England he has shredded their defence with his vision and his distribution.

I’ve been really impressed with the growth he’s shown and the breadth of skill he’s developed since his move to France.

Russell’s shortrange kicking game is the best in the world, his ability to pick a pass and beat a player second to none.

When he started I saw a guy who smiled away mistakes and I felt maybe there was a weakness to him. I don’t see that any more... he’s grown into a sensational player.

Scotland aren’t winning many games without him and this tournament is an opportunity for Finn to show he’s matured into a leader deserving the trust of Lions head coach Warren Gatland.

Farrell has his own challenge. He has not played for two months due to Saracens’ relegation and, however much Faz insists that is irrelevant, I’m not convinced it is.

Scotland-England games are massive occasions. I played in five and we won them all but I’ll tell you there is a pressure that comes with England not having lost at home to the Scots for 38 years.

Nobody wants to be in the team that loses for the first time since 1983. That is a lot of years and you can safely say you would be reminded of it for at least the same number to come.
