POTTERHAILS SPIRIT OF HIS SEAGULLS

- BY TONY BANKS

Premier League: 3pm

GRAHAM POTTER admits that his team ‘suffered’ during their dismal autumn run but is proud they did not feel sorry for themselves.

Brighton’s 1-0 win over Liverpool on Wednesday capped a remarkable turnaround for the club, who have won three of their last four league games and now sit 10 points clear of the drop zone.

Until a victory at Leeds three weeks ago, the Seagulls had won one of their previous 18 matches – a run which had placed Potter (above) under pressure.

But the manager believes his side deserve credit for the way they have faced down the crisis.

Potter said: “We could have felt sorry for ourselves but this is a good group, there is a real togetherness and fight.

“It is not easy if you don’t get results but it is how you respond that is most important and they have always responded well.

“I’m delighted for the players and the supporters because they have suffered as well.”

But Potter, whose team face another tough away test at Burnley today, added: “We have not achieved anything yet. We have to carry on.”

And his side have been hit by a major injury blow, with wing-back Solly March having knee surgery which could rule him out for the rest of the season.

They will also be without midfielder Davy Propper today, but could have Joel Veltman and Alexis Mac Allister back.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche feels his team have a chance to put daylight between themselves and the relegation zone as they head into a run of games against their rivals at the bottom of the table.

The Clarets have Crystal Palace, Fulham and West Brom to come after next week’s FA Cup clash with Bournemouth.

Dyche said: “We have beaten Liverpool away and Villa at home. Brighton have beaten Liverpool away and Tottenham at home.

“So you can win any game but there are some probabilities and some possibilities.

“The next clutch of games are more in the reality of our world.”
