UP to half a million motorists face being “priced off the road” due to clean air zone charges.

The AA said many in London and Birmingham who rely on cars for essential trips might not be able to afford city driving.

Birmingham’s clean air zone starts on June 1 and London’s ultra-low zone expands on October 25.

Drivers in London will pay £12.50 a day and those in Birmingham £8 to enter the zones with a vehicle that breaks emission rules.

AA president Edmund King said: “There is a real risk people will be priced off the road. As many try to avoid public transport this could have a bigger impact than previously thought.”
