WORLD No.1 WILL NOT LET DUST SETTLE

- BIG WIN BY NEIL SQUIRES

DUSTIN JOHNSON believes the World No.1 spot is his for the whole of 2021 after cementing his hold on top spot by landing the Saudi International yesterday.

The commanding American has not finished lower than sixth in any tournament since reclaiming the No.1 position last August.

His extraordinary consistency – shown once again in a two-shot triumph in the desert – means that he is now going to be incredibly hard to shift.

Johnson admitted: “As of right now, I feel like I’m playing very solid.

“I’m seeing a lot of the same things each and every week with my game.

“I’m pleased with where it’s at and where it’s going.

“As long as I can keep this up, I think I’ll be there at the end of the year.

“I knew it was going to be a tough day today.

“There was a lot of really good players right around the lead, it was really windy and hard to get it close to the hole but I knew I was playing well and I hit a lot of greens.

“I come into a tournament looking to contend and obviously I’ve been playing some really good golf the last six months.

“Hopefully I’m going to continue to play this kind of golf.”

Johnson took his second Saudi title in three years with some ease after a final round 68 which left him 15 under par, with Tony Finau and Justin Rose tied for second.

For Englishman Rose it was a restorative result having fallen to No.38 in the world rankings.

“That was the best golf I played in quite some time,” said Rose (above), after his closing 65.

“I haven’t been playing my best golf and it’s easy to get frustrated.

“I’ve stayed with it, even though it felt like it’s been slow going.

“So to play a bogey-free 65 on a Sunday is something to take and fuel the upcoming run.”
