TIGER FEATS & FAILURES
HIGHS
FIRST MAJOR WIN
The 1997 Masters was Woods’ first Major as a professional (Receiving the Green Jacket from Nick Faldo, above). Woods set a tournament record of 18 under par and won by 12 shots. Two months later he was world No.1.
THE ‘TIGER SLAM’
Won the 2000 US Open, then carded four rounds in the 60s to win The Open at St Andrews to become the youngest player to complete a career Grand Slam. Woods successfully defended his US PGA Championship title and a second Masters victory made him the only player to hold all four Major titles at the same time.
2008 US OPEN
His first event since knee surgery saw Woods defeat Rocco Mediate on the first hole of sudden-death, following an 18-hole play-off. It later emerged Woods had been coping with a double stress fracture and knee injury.
2019 MASTERS
After years of injuries, a London consultant recommended Woods undergo what proved to be career-saving spinal fusion surgery. Two years later, he held his nerve on a chaotic final day at Augusta National to win his 15th Major and fifth Green Jacket at the 83rd Masters.
LOWS
DEATH OF HIS FATHER
Woods was devastated by his father’s death in 2006. After a nine-week lay-off, he returned to action in the US Open and missed the cut in a Major for the first time as a professional.
PERSONAL SCANDAL
A car crash in 2009 led to admissions of infidelity. During a televised apology in February 2010, Woods revealed he had undergone 45 days of “inpatient therapy receiving guidance for the issues I’m facing”.
INJURIES
Years of back problems led to spinal fusion surgery in 2017. It proved successful, although Woods still had issues in cold weather and when forced to play more than 18 holes in a day.
DUI
Just weeks after his spinal surgery, Woods was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. He had five prescription drugs in his system at the time and spent 11 months on probation.
