Families unite in demand for inquiry into Government handling of pandemic

- BY AMY-CLARE MARTIN

GRIEVING families have joined calls for Boris Johnson to set a date for an inquiry into his mishandling of the Covid crisis.

More than 206,000 people have so far signed a petition, as the UK death toll reached 126,445.

Campaign group Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice said: “It is the only way they can find out what happened to loved ones.” The PM is stalling on giving a date.

FAMILIES who lost loved ones to Covid have already suffered terrible grief and live with the pain daily.

And Boris Johnson stalling on a public inquiry into the Government’s blunders is only adding to their anguish.

Now, they have united to demand the PM sets a date for a probe into why Britain has the worst deaths in

Europe and how the pandemic was mired in scandal over Test and Trace, PPE and care home tragedies.

More than 206,000 people have so far signed a petition demanding an inquiry.

Campaign group Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice called for a probe following the first wave, but the plea was rejected. Reiterating the demand, co-founder Jo Goodman said: “For many bereaved families an inquiry is likely to be the only way they can find answers to what happened to their loved ones.

“An official account of what did and did not happen, independent of political influence, can help provide closure for those in mourning.

“The Prime Minister has promised an inquiry, and if he can tell us when the pubs will reopen, it’s time he told us when it will start.

“It’s hard to believe it was last June when we were calling on the Government to hold a rapid review of its handling of the pandemic so lessons could be learnt to prepare for winter.

“They refused and we watched as the second wave death toll dwarfed that of the first, and thousands of new members joined our group.
