A GRANDAD won a lifechanging lottery sum after forgetting his glasses.

Denis Fawsitt, 80, would normally use his family birthdays as numbers for his weekly EuroMillions ticket but left his glasses at home so couldn’t see clearly, so he asked staff for a Lucky Dip.

Now Denis and wife, Ann, 75, are £116,124 richer and want to help their two daughters and three grandchildren.

“This money will help them more than us,” Ann said. But they added they will treat themselves to a house and garden makeover at their home in Hatton, South Derbyshire.

Retired coal miner and builder Denis said: “I tried to pick my numbers, but I just couldn’t. I went to pay for my papers and asked the lady for a Lucky Dip. It turned out to be one of my best decisions ever.

I had this funny feeling we were going to win.”

The next morning Denis went back, with his glasses, to get his daily newspapers and asked staff to check his ticket.

They told him he had to call Camelot because he’d won a large amount of money.

Denis called his daughter Sally as soon as he got home, asking her to pop in on her way to work to check the ticket. “We all went into shock upon hearing the news,” Denis said.

And wife Ann, who used to work for KP Snacks, said there was no dancing to celebrate the news: “Not at our age, especially with Denis’ bad back.

“When the win was confirmed, we did have a glass or two of fizz and, when it’s safe, we’ll have a big family party.”

Their ticket matched five numbers and one Lucky Star in the Euromillions on March 16.
