Too old for trainers

-

He played football for a living and holds a multimillion pound lifetime contract with Adidas – but at 45, David Beckham’s children have told him he’s too old to wear trainers.

Thankfully, David has a back catalogue of far more embarrassing outfits – including a sarong and a matching Gucci leather two piece he paired with wife Victoria – with which he managed to convince his brood that trainers in his mid forties are the least of their worries...

“I’ve got a 22-year-old, an 18-year-old, a 16-year-old and a nine-year-old daughter,” sighs David. “I put on a pair of trainers the other day, and they were like, ‘Really dad? Do you not think you’re a bit old for those?’ I was like, ‘No!’.

“Then I showed them 20 different pictures of me wearing other stuff and they were like, ‘OK, maybe you can’.”

He still has three sarongs, purchased before he famously wore a black one in 1998. He explains: “I thought, ‘I can pull that off ’. So I got one in red, blue and black.”

Now, David wants his children to be free to make equally questionable fashion choices. “Nobody was turning around to me and saying, ‘Don’t do it’. I felt I could wear what I wanted. We’re the same with our kids. It makes me feel old seeing them express themselves. It’s amazing to watch.” Speaking at the Digital MIPTV conferences David confirmed plans for a £16million Netflix biopic chronicling his life, after launching his TV production company Studio 99. “I only want to do it once now’s the right time to do it,” he said.

He is also mentoring young grassroots footballers in a new series for Disney+, which saw him return to Hackney Marshes where he grew up playing Sunday league.
