Shut pubs that don’t ban idiots

- T Maunder, Leeds

IT’S shocking but not surprising to see photos of crowds in pub gardens and queuing outside shops with no social distancing this week (Mirror, April 14).

It’s understandable people want their freedom – but we’re not out of the woods yet by a long shot.

And with new cases of the South African variant in South London we need to be extra vigilant.

If we’re not careful the covidiots will undo all the good work achieved to get us to this point.

Pub landlords have a role to play in all this. If they don’t ban customers breaking rules, they should be forced to close for a while.

If everyone uses common sense and sticks to the rules, we can defeat this virus.

I agree with Dr Antonis Kousoulis of the Mental Health Foundation that we should give young people a break.

Of course they will head to pubs to mix with friends after being stuck indoors for months, affecting their mental health. They’ve behaved remarkably well considering the disruption to their education and lives. Have people forgotten what it’s like to be young when friends are the most important thing in your life? We know infection rates will rise as restrictions ease, but we can’t stay locked down. Helen Dodd, Watford

Will I be rushing to an outdoor pub garden or to the

shops? No, if I want to drink outside I’ll l go into my own garden. At least I can return to the warm refuge of my house before I freeze to death.

I can wait till the pubs open properly to sit with friends and enjoy a drink and conversation.

Judging by pictures this week we can’t trust the drunken masses to stick to rules as they have a track record for ignoring restrictions.

I’ll wait until we are relatively safe as we can be from this awful virus before I go to the pub .

This week I’ve seen many images of people outside pubs with no masks, hugging, touching and no social distancing.

These rules are still in place and they are breaking them.

Now wait for the surge in cases and deaths in June or July when, once again, those of us who are sensible will have our lives ruined by another lockdown.

The PM says gains in the fight against Covid-19 have not been achieved by the vaccination programme, but by restrictions.

If so, have we all been vaccinated for nothing?

Ian Bentley, Pudsey, West Yorks

Why are people stupid enough to sit in overcrowded pub gardens or queue for Primark?

What’s the rush when these places will be open tomorrow, this week and next week? It’s not worth the risk and the rules for social distancing still apply.

Jack Hodgson, Plymouth

Now that more vaccines are on the way and soon all UK adults should be offered a jab, even more people in this country can be protected – and we can all return to a sense of normality even sooner. Phil Brand, South West London
