A BOY has been praised for his honesty after handing back hundreds of pounds that poured out of an ATM.

Jack Greenhalgh, 11, had been fiddling with buttons on the cashpoint when it started churning out notes. He alerted a cleaner in the Asda store and a security guard arrived to collect the money. A customer had earlier reported the ATM had not given her the funds she had requested.

Jack said: “I thought the machine was out of order and I just pressed buttons, messing about.

“Next thing, it started beeping and all of a sudden, lots of money started coming out. I thought, ‘Is this some sort of magic ATM?’”

Jack admitted that if he found a pound he would probably keep it, but he would never hold on to such a large amount.

“I’m not that kind of person to do theft,” he said.

“I’m not stupid and I wouldn’t take money like that. It’s wrong. It could be life savings.”

Jack, from Swinton, Greater Manchester, was rewarded with a £10 gift voucher from Asda.

His mum said: “He rang me and said he’d found a lot of money, so I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He told me what had happened and that he’d handed it in. I said, ‘That’s brilliant’.

“If he’d have come home with it, it just wouldn’t have been right.

“He wouldn’t have slept. That’s the kind of kid he is. I’m proud of him for doing the right thing.”
