‘Green steel’ could create 40,000 jobs
RECASTING the northern steel industry with greener tech could create 40,000 jobs and save 12,000 more, a report claims.
The Institute for Public Policy Research North says the region could become a world leader in lowcarbon production.
The change would cost around £150million a year this decade, rising to £300million by 2035 to make it carbon net zero.
Report author Jonathan Webb said: “If we are serious about powering up our regions, we need to be serious about harnessing the incredible potential of ‘Green Steel’.”
It comes amid mounting uncertainty over the future of Liberty Steel following the collapse of main lender Greensill Capital. The firm employs 3,000 UK staff.
