When all the pomp and ceremony is stripped away, Prince Philip’s most enduring legacy will be the 73-year love match with his Princess Lilibet. Today’s poem by Dawn Hough in Northwich, Cheshire, gets to the heart of their love story.

The 63-year-old, who’s been married to Steve for 44 years, says: “I’m a cleaner at the local secondary school but poetry has been my hobby for a number of years.”

The personal side of the royal couple’s life inspired Dawn to write her poem. She explains: “When the news broke, I thought about their long relationship. I think we tend to forget sometimes the Royals are people like us – they are a grieving family, especially the Queen.”
