RODGERS: I WILL MAKE IT FIFTH TIME LUCKY FOR CUP FLOP FOXES

- BY JAMES NURSEY

BRENDAN RODGERS is determined Leicester will finally lift the FA Cup for the first time – admitting he did not know when he took charge that it was a trophy they had never won.

City have an unwanted record of being the team to reach the most finals – four – without winning one.

Rodgers (above) aims to put an end to that sorry statistic against Chelsea at Wembley tomorrow when the Foxes make their first FA Cup final appearance since 1969.

“I didn’t know they had never won the Cup before when I arrived,” said Rodgers, who guided Leicester to fifth last season and into the Europa League in his first full campaign after arriving in February 2019 from Celtic.

“I know in the ’60s they had a season ticket for Wembley and there were a number of finals they got to. “You get the sense of how important it is to the supporters. This is a real community club where the FA Cup is such a prestigious competition. There is a story of a guy who went to Wembley on his bike and then couldn’t get back because someone stole it.

“These things are all part of our great history. We hope we can be the first and write our history here. If we can do that then it might be the start of more FA cups.

“We have earned the right to be in the final. If we can play to our level we have a great chance.”

Leicester won 2-1 at Manchester United on Tuesday to strengthen their bid for a place in the top-four and again were without experienced centre-back Jonny Evans (above).

The Northern Ireland defender has missed the last two matches with a heel injury. But Rodgers is hopeful he will be fit to start at Wembley.

He said: “We’re giving him another day, he has progressed well in the last 24 hours. He looked good and we’ll see what the reaction is and make the final decision.

“Jonny is a warrior and if there is any way he can play – even if he’s not 100 percent – he will be out there.

“We’re still very positive he’s going to play. It is a showpiece game so you want to be involved in those.

“In my time here he has been immense. We have other players to come in but if Jonny is available and fit enough it’s a huge boost for us.”
