Our front page photo showed Grenfell Tower engulfed in flames. A total of 72 people were killed in the West London inferno that spread rapidly because of the building’s flammable cladding.

RAF Captain John Alcock and Lt Arthur Brown completed the first non-stop transatlan­tic flight from Canada to Ireland. The 1,980-mile trip took 16 hours and 12 minutes.

50 YEARS AGO (1971)

Ex-Education Secretary Margaret Thatcher’s bill to end free school milk passed its second reading, earning the Tory the nickname “Thatcher the milk snatcher”.
