RAF Captain John Alcock and Lt Arthur Brown completed the first non-stop transatlantic flight from Canada to Ireland. The 1,980-mile trip took 16 hours and 12 minutes.

Ex-Education Secretary Margaret Thatcher’s bill to end free school milk passed its second reading, earning the Tory the nickname “Thatcher the milk snatcher”.
