Strawberry yields forever as sun sizzles
THE price of strawberries has plummeted thanks to a glut of the fruit.
Soaring temperatures and blazing sun have created bumper crops.
They have been snapped up by supermarkets, meaning shoppers can get a kilo for £3 compared with £2 for a 400g punnet.
Alastair Brooks, of BR Brooks fruit in Graveney, Kent, said there was an abundance of strawberries despite the damp May.
He added: “They are big, sweet and full of vitamins.”
Tesco buyer Laura Mitchell added: “Last week’s heatwave brought the strawberries on very quickly. It meant growers had more than expected.”
