FRESH PROBE INTO GANGLAND MURDERS ‘AIDED BY BENT COP’

Police review two 1989 killings linked to Kray twin associate

THE 1989 unsolved gangland executions of a couple linked to an associate of the Kray twins is the focus of a new police review.

It comes after a Mirror probe found corrupt detectives may have shielded the killers of Terry Gooderham, 39, and Maxine Arnold, 32.

Cops believe they were taken from Maxine’s home and

Terry was forced to drive to Epping Forest in East London, where they were found shot dead.

A “gold group” of officers are supervising the review. An ex-detective told the

Mirror in 2019 he had names of three gangsters days after the killings but that the murder squad did not get his data log.

Maxine’s mother Violet died without getting justice for her daughter.

A relative said: “Maxine was such a lovely girl and her life was wasted.”

Bar stocktaker Terry was apparently killed to stop him revealing a scam involving the hijacking of booze lorries to supply a pub protection racket.

It is understood two former cops on the original murder squad confirmed the whistleblower’s account. All three named a now-retired officer they claim tried to interfere with the original inquiry. At the time he was under investigation for corruption.

The new review is looking into the “missing log” and if officers working with a crime family held up the case.

A 1990 police report revealed they were looking at David Hunt, Jimmy Holmes and Cornelius Whitehead, a Kray ally. The outcome was that Hunt was not charged as the murder remains unsolved. Holmes, 62, denied the killings but admitted having roles in shootings and torture with Hunt. Whitehead, 84, was jailed as an accessory to the 1967 murder of Jack “the Hat” McVitie. Mr Hunt’s solicitor said: “Mr Hunt denies any involvement in the murders of Terry Gooderham and Maxine Arnold. He also denies that he was involved in any way with any corrupt police officers.”

Scotland Yard said the murders were reviewed periodically and that the new info would be “carefully assessed”.

It comes as Met chief Dame Cressida Dick faces a report today into the 1987 murder of private eye Daniel Morgan.
