Kasper: Win it for Christian

- BY CHRIS McKENNA

KASPER SCHMEICHEL has urged Denmark to win the Euros for Christian Eriksen after visiting his stricken team-mate in hospital.

The Leicester City keeper said: “It was damn nice to see him smile and laugh and be himself and just feel that he’s there. It was a great experience and something that has helped me a lot.”

Eriksen is recovering from a cardiac arrest during Sweden’s Group B opener against Finland on Saturday. The Inter Milan midfielder collapsed and was resuscitated on the pitch in traumatic scenes in Copenhagen.

Schmeichel was one of the first to console teammates and Eriksen’s wife Sabrina Kvist Jensen.

The game restarted less than two hours after the incident, with Denmark losing 1-0. They play group favourites Belgium on Thursday and Schmeichel is focused on getting back on track and is motivated to succeed for the former Tottenham man.

“We’re still in the tournament,” he said. “Now, we have to try to see if we can win this and do it for Christian and do it for all the fans who sat with us and were just as powerless in the situation as we were.

“I’ve no doubt that this team has the unity, the strength to be able to come together and go out and do something special.”
