WEMBLEY BOOST DESPITE DELAY

-

week delay in easing of lockdown restrictions. And Wimbledon, which begins on June 28, will see its women’s and men’s singles finals played in front of a full 15,000 Centre Court crowd.

But access to the events will be restricted to those who have been vaccinated or can prove their negative Covid status with a Lateral Flow Test – with all proofs to be shown via the NHS App, as the Government significantly increases the trials of vaccine passports. Prime Minster Boris Johnson delayed the country’s full reopening from June 21 to July 19 yesterday but various sports test events will still go ahead.

And, as well the Euros and Wimbledon, golf’s Open Championship, the British Grand Prix and rugby league’s Challenge Cup final could all get bigger crowds.

These will form part of the Government’s “Events Research Programme” that gives them flexibility to have the rules on public gatherings to be suspended.

Johnson said: “We will continue to pilot events such as Euro 2020 and some theatrical performances.”

Wimbledon will start with 50 per cent ground capacity, rising to 100 per cent on Centre Court for the finals.

England’s first game against Croatia went ahead with fans on Sunday, while the FA Cup final and Carabao Cup final were both deemed big successes after being included in Government tests events.

The R&A will announce ticket details for the Open at Royal St George’s in July “in the next few days.”
