‘Large’ wave might strike this autumn

- BY MARTIN BAGOT Health Editor

A “LARGE” Covid wave may strike in autumn with 1,000 people admitted to hospital daily, it is feared.

Prof Neil Ferguson, from Imperial College London, said cases have “plateaued” at around 30,000 per day.

But he added “there is the potential of quite a large wave” next month and in October, after schools and offices reopen.

However, he said due to jabs it is “unlikely” any surge in admissions will lead to fatality rates seen this year.

Yesterday, the number of Covid patients in hospital in England rose to 5,429 – a five-month high.

The British Medical Association warned the situation remains “very precarious” and the public should stay cautious as self-isolation rules are eased this week.
