Safety plea after tragic farm deaths

- BY KIRSTEN ROBERTSON

FARMERS are being urged to improve safety after four fatal incidents in a month.

In the latest tragedy, on August 10, a man was apparently trampled to death by cattle in a field in Marshfield, Wilts.

On July 27, a man died in a fall from height at a farm in Angus, Scotland, while on August 3 a boy of three died in a collision with a vehicle in South Wales.

On August 9, a man was crushed to death by a farm truck ramp. The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the incidents.

HSE’s Adrian Hodkinson said: “There are simple measures workers can take to reduce risk; ensuring dairy bulls and cows with calves are not in fields with public footpaths.”

He called for a “change in attitude” in the industry.
