Lascelles: Fly higher, Magpies

- BY SIMON BIRD

JAMAAL LASCELLES has called for a more ruthless mindset from Newcastle United this season.

Lascelles is bidding to prove he is up to full fitness this week after being left on the bench for the opening weekend, following on from a season when he was only fit for 19 games.

He is keen to get back in the picture as Magpies boss Steve Bruce looks to solve defensive issues and he said: “It’s a collective change between the players. We’ve got some really good professionals. We’ve got an experienced dressing room.

“We’ve been in the Premier League long enough now to say, ‘Let’s try to push for the top 10’.

“We’ve finished 10th, 13th, 13th and 12th so there’s no reason why we can’t aim higher now.”

Bruce’s side, who lost 4-2 to West Ham on Sunday, will have Joe Willock available next weekend at Aston Villa.

And Callum Wilson says he wants his goals to count for something, not cushion defeats. He said: “When you score you want it to mean something. I want my goals to amount to points. To score and lose is frustrating.”
